Chrysler released a cool new commercial about Detroit and their new 200 automobile. The ad has become a big deal for Detroit. Coming from and working in Taylor, a suburb of the Motor City, we often joke about the back yard tree, or even the front yard tree, being used to support a chain fall to pull a motor, or a kitchen being used as a clean room to rebuild a motor. So working at Watson Engineering in my home town of Taylor is a natural home for car builders. The owner Chuck, his sons, and his employees are born metal workers and motor heads. Once a year, the Detroit’s area largest car show, AutoRama, comes to town where local motor heads and metal artist show of their work. As a child, my father took me to this show; one year he even had his own Model A on display in Cobo Hall. As a teenager, I spent many hours dreaming of ownership of one of these cool autos. Another good more affordable dream was the display of rat rods in the basement of Cobo. Rat rods are the cars that even Taylor motor heads and metal artist could afford to build.
Now that I'm working at Watson Engineering in Taylor, we can move upstairs in Cobo Hall again! This year was a good year for the Autorama show, with Chuck Senior and Chuck Jr. having their cars in the show. My good buddy Bob from Watson’s had his low rider in the show also, along side old Taylor favorites like Ramchargers, Ford Racing, and others. I don’t know what Taylor has to do with it, but I'm sure glad to have been brought up and work in a motor head artist community like Taylor!
